MATCH INDUSTRY.
BRYANT AND MAY’S ENTERPRISE (Per Press WELLINGTON, May 2. The law as to tenants retaining possession of houses is delaying Bryant ami May’s proposed erection of a big match factory at Te Aro. There are some houses to be pulled down, and the tenants eanont be summarily ejected. On Monday a private deputation from the Central Progress League met the Minister of Labour, the Hon. G. J. Anderson, with reference to the endeavours being made to release the sit? on Te Aro flat for the erection of a match factory. It was stated subsequently that the position was now as follows: —On the land acquired by the company there were 29 houses standing and occupied. It is necessary to obtain possession ot nine of these before building can be started. The company has been most generous in its terms to the tenants, offering a year’s rent to any of the nine who were out by the beginning of this month. This offer is being extended for 14 days. The Government has offered to build houses costing £650 for persons now in residence on the property, and in order that there may be no difficulty in accepting this proposition, the company will find deposits. There are only four children in the nine houses of which possession is desired. If the houses are not vacated by May 14, the company will take legal steps to obtain possession, as it is held that the offers of the Government and company justify such action.
