NEW HEBRIDES.
PROPOSAL TO PRANCE. SYDNEY, Jan IS. In connection with the proposal made at the Imperial Conference that French interests in the New Hebrides should be ceded to Britain in exchange for other Colonial possessions, or a reduction in the debt due to Britain by France, a director of the Messageries Maritimes Coy. has forwarded a letter to the French Colonial Office protesting against the suggestion. He declares that three-quarters of the land in the group under cultivation, is owned by French subjects who number 600, compared to 200 British. The larger portion of the business is also in French hands. The latter urges that in view of these facts, the condominium should be abolished and the Islands revert to the French. The director says that a portion of the British favour this change, and he claims to represent the feeling of the residents of the New Caledonia and New Hebrides, where meetings of protest against the proposal were recently held.
