MILLERTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) The weather was very favourable for cricket on Sunday last. Tho Denniston A team visited Millerton and suffered defeat, the Millerton team "mining by an innings and some rujis. The Dennisfon team last all their wickets in the first innings for twenty runs, Pomeroy and Homer being responsible for all the wickets, the bowling being of a very high order. The Aiillcrton teairi made 137 runs. Dcnniston, in their second innings, made \i ( .) runs. Millorfon so far havo won each match they have played. They still have to meet the best teams in the district, but I fancy they will hold their own with the best. The Licensing Bench have ordered repairs to one of our local hotels and nave given the owner, Mrs. E. Nahr six weeks i n which to comply with the* request. The Bench wore very considerate when they allow the publican- to carry on through the holidays The repairs are very much needed, but if it was ' not for the splendid tenant that Mrs. Nahr has, who always keeps the place up to tho ( mark, the house would have been closed long ago. The public should be considered by these owners of miblichouscs, in making them /it for human habitation and pnblie convenience, seeing that they extract such exorbitant rents from their tenants. It is near time that the -Bench were given power to control the rents of publia-uouseß.-*I suppose that the brewers and pubiic-house owners feel that -a the next election Prohibition will be earned and they wish to make hay while the sun shiiios. There is a general shortage of miners here at present, the men gradually i?u tlll 3- away ' cs Peeially from the Millerton mine. Perhaps the New" Xeur will see a few returning; but at present there is very little encourage mont for men to come here. The loim hours that a man has to put in m got tmg to and from his work is the great drawback. The Company will have to face this proposition sooner or later, and build some conveyance to carry the men to and from their work. Until this is done, I can hold outvciy Ui tie hope of this mine bcino- fuhv maimed. To allow the men who are going on their holidays, and who desire to be payed before they leave the Company are making the pay dav on Friday, December 24, instead "of on December 31. This arrangement should meet with general approval. * hear that our local butcher, Mr. W. Eddy, i s selling out his business, and is intending to take up another business outside Christchurch. We' trust that his successor will keep up the same standard of efficiency in regard to cleanliness and civility as Mr Ktldy. If this is clone, I have' *, :o -doubt that they will get the general support of tho Millorton public. Our local baker, Mr. H. Bovan, is turning out a really good 'loaf. He also keeps a good supply of smallgoods. The public feel the difference of having a baker on Millerton. Iris to be hoped that general support is given him to enable him to carry on Wo would not like to fall back on the old style of everyone being compelled to bake their own bread, or t;;kc crushed-up, stale, bread from Westport. Quite a. few of our residents :>re selecting their spots at Mokinihui lor camping during the holidays. It its to be hoped that the weather conditions will be favourable. Surely we lu.ve had sufficent bad weather now to warrant a few weeks of sunshine. Let I iih lu.pc «o, anyhow.
