HOW THIEVES OPERATE.

Recently in Sydney thieves have been busy ; iSbme of -their methods of transferring other peoples money to their own care have been cool' annd daring. A. few. weeks ago' an old'iady wline standing in a bank after having wiitidrawn a considerable sum of money was approached by a man. without, a coat and with . avperi in his mouth. He apologised to, the lady but .said that he should like to have the notes back for a minute as the numbers had not been checked. The costless gentleman made a clean getaway. But a few days ago at the TouristBureau in Sydney a lady was handed a five pound note in change. A man who : looked like an official came bowling along and said that siie should have been given, five single notes. He took the. fiver and went to get the singles, but somehow he failed to return. It is'not'tltought that he will now. Another c&se in Sydnoy. We Sydney people are not quite so smart as you thought perhaps. Maybe we have Melbourne visitors here Anyway we read that a man was stand ing in'a bar down town , ; and learned i.i conversation with a strange man that; gold was procurable in exchange for notes and parted, with 50 £. notes to this strange man to get- the gold. There could'nt have been, anything much simpler than that could there ? He did hot, retura with the gold so possibly, found it not so easy to get 50 gold coins and as for the notes, 'well,, the theory is that he just put them away in his, pocket disgusted and wlilkcd off.
