MR. E. J. S.CANTLEBURY,

Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Scantlcbury, who arc leaving the Beef ton .district, to take up their future abode in Nelson, will ia March next take a trip to Cornwall. Mr. Scantlebury, during his forty years in Reefton,- has occupied positions in .almost-.:, all public toodics, his willingness making him a real public man. He was a member of the inangahua County Council for many years, and chairman several times. He was a member- and secretary of the Reefton School Committee for 36 years; secretary of the Fire Brigade for 39 years, and secretary of the Foresters ; ' Lodge for 40 years. On his retiring from the County .Council the members presented , him with a purse of sovereigns. The ladies of the I Benevolent* Society and (Patriotic Committee, of which Mrs. Scantlcbury. was a very active member, presented vher with a handsome aluminium kettle. The Wesley Congregation tendered the departing citizens a social and concert- ia their honour, and made them a presentation as some mark of appreciation for their labours for the church. On Thursday afternoon the Reefton Jockey Club held, a ; happy litr tie function and presented Mr... Scantlebury with a travelling rug. On Thursday evening the present and past members of ' the Reef ton , School Committee,, together with o,ther ■ citizens, met at Mrs., Lanfberton's Tea Rooms, when Mr. Seantlebury was again farewelled. Mr. D. Pankhurst, chairman ,of the Reefton .District .High School, was ,in the -chair, and, Mr. W. A. Bumbold' the vice-chair. Various toasts were honoured, and the guest was presented 'with a shyer flask! Mr. Scaiir tlebury, mi all occasions, .expressed h> great regret at leaying Reefton, and heartily thanked the friends he was leaving behind, whom he would never forget.
