MILLERTON NOTES

1 ■ + ■ » [ (Our own Correspondent). Since my last not-os ; we have experienced a very rougli week, the weatlier conditions being anything but pleasant. The Millerton mine has been idle for three days, owing to the slackness in shipping. Another instance of the monoply of the Union Steamship Co. Of course, the weather win oe Diamc?d, but it"?s strange that for. the last three years wo have never had the same experience of loosing three shifts on end. What about Mr Massey's State-owned boats? It is now time that tliey came to light. Anyhow, the present Government supports monopliesj so Henry can close up for the present We are loosing men very fast at present, but if the whistle blows a few more times, our population will still be further reduced Never mtnd, there is .plenty of money in the country to buy American coal. Without troubling about our local mines. When are all these new mines to. open up? The Union Company wrmts to buy into them, if they are ever going to succeed The Granity Band Contest takes place on Friday and Saturday next. We hope that weather, conditions will favour them, as Granity is an ideal place to spend a couple of days, and the programme will be well worth listening to. The proceeds of the recent ball in aid of the Women and Children of Broken. Hill was cabled to Broken Hill yesterday. The total amount was £57. This is a credit to the MilleTton and Stockton public, not forgetting the support! given by outsiders. We hear that quite a few couples on the Hill are contemplating matrimony. The iirst to lead off will bo Mr John Clark and Miss Mary Suium. They are to be married on Saturduv next. We wish them, all sorts oi good luck. The Millerton Cricketers had .their . iirst win on Sunday last. They beat luaui Dy qunc a good m.n gin of runs. Dcnniston team arc to be complimented on journeying vo i.iillerton in such unsettled weather. We find that Sunday is a very suitable day in which to play cricket, and seeding that we now have a motor lorry here owned by Mr Jack Hunter, it makes it very convenient to get to the different places in the one day. And as we have no objectors to Sunday sport, everything is O.K. The Millerton Boxing Association has been unlucky again. They received a wire the other clay informing 1 them that Garvey would be unable to fight Senior on December 4th, owing to an injury to his hand. The Association is now endeavouring to get a suitable opponent for Senior. All the other items of the programme are arranged.

Fox, Bowatcr, and Standage: Sports, I\lcssrs McKcnzic, Bryan and Craig with x^owcr to add. Canvassers for cxliibits: Messrs Williams, Archer (Cape) Mr O 'Sullivan (Ad,disons), Mr Morris (Charleston) Miss Cullum and Mr Price (Brighton), Mr W. C. Wilson (Sgt. Hill), Messrs G.
