WESTPORT NOTES

» ~sJL»? . -••■ I st ufc (Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, Xovmul'cr 10. .The Westport State fc?''.u.ool Committee has at last decided to go m for a primary school to relieve, somewhat the congestion at the present central institution, and also to provide for the ever-growing population at tbc Nine-mile end of the town. This subsidiary school has been a burning question for some years past. It is quite in. the order of events that the side school will be located in a threesection area, owned by Mr Heavy Nahr in Mensham Street, .between Russell and Queen Streets. The price of th & area is £S7sl, and the Nelson Education Board has been asked to find the money. It is not so iaa*y years ago that a proposal was mooted to sell out the present school block in Palmerston Street bo to transfer school energies from the business centre of the town. It appears that >n several instances at the State School, pupils have been nominated for schu»arships without the parents' knowledge. This is rather a serious step in what may be termed domestic alicnisation.. The School Committee has instructed the Principal to have a stop put to such nefarious practice. Talking about school matters reminds the writer that the committee has also instructed the teaching staff to give the pupils lessons and demonstrations in the proportional representation system of voting. „ The Nelson Education Board has dc- ' cided that next year meetings .will be nuid the iirst Thursday in each month. Mr George Powell is expected home from Australia shortly. It is stated that his connection Avith. the tin, uaning in the Malay Archipelago proposition will necessitate his travelling feev"eral times to and from the island Continent. : i Rev. Griffin, who is on the retired list of the Methodist Church ministry, but. who is temporarily in active service in Westport as locum tenons for Eev. Watson,- is returning to his home in Papanui, (Christ church) as soon au a suitable substitute can be faund. • „ The barqucntinc Senorita, which brought a load of Australian hard wood, for wharf purposes at Westport, is taking part of her cargo to Greymouth for similar use and will load coal on return journey to the Clarence River. A. AND P. PARS* ,' At l a meeting held in Secretary Kadford's office last night (Tuesday; it was unanimously decided to hold the Agricultural and Pastoral Show tlns^ year. There was a good representation of farmers,;, present many of whom expressed the desirability of continuing with, the annual show, pointing to the utility and advantages to be gained from the holding of s\ich. The ladies were conpieuous by their absence. (The women folk on. such occasions are generally very bad starters, but in the end prove excellent finishers). Several of the gentlemen present; pajS'sed complimentary; and ©monistic remarks on the excellence of the work done by the lady members of the committee in the past. The tea and luncheon room, which was always under their management, was one of the most profitable conet ins of the sho^w In fact the return from this department had, more than once, saved the financial situation of the A. and P. undertakings. Mr J. Snodgrass suggested that the local Association become affiliated with the New Zealand * Agricultural and Pastoral Association, which, would enable us to secure the service of the best judges in the Domiion. Men in the Breeders' Association were <ronversant with the points to be observed in the^various breeds of cattlo tmd that is what was required hero. . The committee were very desirous to cut out canvassing expenses from the programme this year.* £2o was spent oii 'it' last year and, it was thought to be too big a drain on finances and at the same time an expense that was avoidable. A • suggestion was made tSat the services of a couple cf .insurance agents be engaged to r.o- the work while on their busiw;ss tour of the district. An excellent idea was brought forward by Mr Bryan, who suggested that the management committee pick out a couple of young farmers in the district to precede the imported judges in their inspection of the cattle exhibits on show day: take notes on the various beasts, and when the prizes are a Warded, to compare their decisions witii those of the experts engaged for the purpose. This he thought would ha great education for the farmers >n the district. It Would bring them into touch with the judges from »..-h.om much valuable information could sought. It was not an uncommon practice in the agricultural centers f-f the North Island, and if it could be dom; here the local association avail themselves of the advantages to be gained. The following committee were scm: up in connection- with the forthcoming show: — Horse. Committed: Messrs McKenzie, Byran,. Enrigljt, with power to add: Cattle: — Brunning, Rea, Atkinson, McPaddoh, Roselli, Tenant, Paul, McKcnzie, Snodgrass, Power, Todd. It was decided to leave the poultry section of the show to> the management of the Poultry Club. Home industries: —Messrs Dale, Young, Skilton, Parry,
