LYTTELTON TUNNEL RAILWAY.
DUPLICATION OR ELECTRIFICATION? WELLINGTON, Jim c 5. At the Industries Committee to-day, Mr McVilley, General Manager of Railways, replying to a question by Mr Hornsby as to why the Railway Department did not. electrify the Lytte'ltftn tunnel instead of duplicating the line as was proposed, dealt with the two aspects of the case. Mr Me"Villey stated, that .Mr Parry, tho electrical expert, Avheri dealing with .the matter of electrification found that he Had sufficient power only to deal with the pajssenger service by electricity. As the goods traffic was very heavy, it would b e necessary ,to have more Steam than electric trains. For that reason, it was decidec that to duplicate was the wiser thing. More investigations were being made into the matter, and if the Lake Coleridge plant were increased the Department might electrify the tunnel. Mr McVilloy agreed that it would be a blessing to- th c paaengers if the .smoke nuisance could be abolished. It would also be a blessing to the Department.
