MURCHISON NOTES
jKETUENED MAIN BODY OFFICER. I Lieut. Philips Bennett, M.C., who re- ' turned by the Corinthie a few days j ago, is staying with is parents, Mr and Mrs J. Bennett. Lieut. Bennett left when only sixteen, with the Main j Body, as a private, and had had four, years continuous service at the fr.nit. Needless to say, we are proud of his record and glad to see him again . amongst us. Dr. Louis Bennett, aI brother, recently obtained his M.D. at 'Dunedin and has beqn appointed to tho Christchurch Hospital. PEACE CELEBRATIONS. The Comity Council, having decided not to take up the matter of Peace Celebrations, or even to donate a small! sum towards the celebrations, the Murchison School Committee have tak- ' en the arrangements in hand. It is to be hoped that tho genera] public t will subscribe, with their usual generosity and give the "kiddies" a time that they will remember for the rest of their lives. | GOLD MINING. ] We were up to the Howard Goldfield lately and were glad to note that several claims had a well defined paystreak located. The run of gold is very coarse and shows a lot of wear. Some thirty miners arc on the field at present. Those who are on pay are well satisfied ; those who have not as yet cornered the elusive pennyweight, hope to do so' soon. ' : A USEFUL TRACK. Last week sixty fat bullocks from Kinnear's and Davis 's Station, in charge of Mr W. O'Rourkc, were driv- ' en down to the freezing works •at Stoke. By going through by the 1 Lake track, and down the Gowau. fully eight miles were saved. It is hoped that the Government- will soon ■ push work on this track, so as to en- i able the Bracburn- Settlers to have vc- j hicular connection with the 1 Terminus at Glcuhope. It is ten years or over, i since Bracburn was cut up and. made i a special settlement. For this period j the settlers have had to take the cir- 1 cuitous route via Longford to reach tho railway. A poor inducement to settlement of the back blocks. THE LIBRARY. The Murchison Library has taken a new lease of life since a committee;' consisting of Mesdames Bennett, Hiiys, Watson , Messrs. Maearthy, Milnej •Stewart, and Brown have been elected. The librarian. Mr MaCarthy, is to be congratulated for the manner in which he has arranged the books, and .the Committee for the splendid selection of new books wo sec on the shelves. NEW CAR. We hear Mr Keating is adding a ear. to hi s livery stable equipment. We notice the popular Frod is always ready to anticipate the public requirements. LIME COMPANY. Mr Stewart, Hon. Sec, of the newformed Murehison Lime Company, tells us that the Directors are meeting shortly to enquire into the matter of plant. It is hoped that nothing will be definitely decided upon until the 1 hydro-electric scheme is completed. At j tho same time the interests of tho out- i lying districts must have due consideration and a portab 1 1 plant will have to ] be installed. To vsk farmers to cart two tons to the acre over .our present roads for any great distance is out of the question.
