During the course of his remarks His Lordship regretted his inability to visit the Tereinakau Settlement, owing to the flooded state of the river. He also expressed pleasure at tho' way Kumara had kept up, and. predicted that af tor the war when our young men returned. ? , thintrs would greatly improve in these* >» parts. _js • V Complaints of late have been pretty^ persistent with reference to the attitude taken up by a large bull running at large on .tho Kumara-Beach RoacL Tho animal, which has been running in the "big paddock" for quite a long time, has, only recently, developed a tendency to bail up all and sundry, with the result that much discomfort has r been caused to pedestrians passing to and fro. So far our bovine friend has not been accused of actually . committing any harm, but some day a. different tale might have to be /told, so it would be just as well if the owner of the animal took steps to have him secured. Amongst the returned soldiers to the Coast last week was. an old and respected Kumara resident In tho person of Mr John Close. Mr Close left Kumara about three years agp and saw " a gaid deal of active service. He was several times wounded, the last time so seriously, that he had. to have an *♦ cj'o amputated.. However, bad and jdfir \ \ as things are, Mr Close considers hin£ self extremely, lucky, for, to use his' I '^ own words, he says; "I left for th» *' front with nothing, and returned with, a wife, so you see. I did not do so badly after all" His many friends will w.ah both Mr and Mrs Close ,lon ff years of happiness and prosperity. to lose aryaluable horse in the early part of the week, rt appears that, ' out of the stable; started to roll, andL S* ■ \ b ™ ko its ie S- with the result that it had to be destroyed.
