— . — ~+. The ordinary meeting of the abuve was held yesterday. In the absence of his Worship the Mayor (Mr 3.1). Lynch), Cr Parfitt, (Acting Mayor) occupied the chair, and the following were present: Messrs J£. A. Wickes, J. McLean, D. McKay, P. N. Jeffrey's D. Tennent, and P. MacKenzie. 1 CORRESPONDENCE. From Hon. W. F. Massey, Prime Minister, acknowledging remit from this Association in connection with the Order of the Britsh Empre, and that such would be £- y en careful considera-
tion: — Received. Moved by Mr Wickes that a copy of the resolution be forwarded to each Member of Parliament,— Carried. From the Wellington War Relief Association reporting .an unsatisfactory case; — Received and filed for reference. From Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association reporting an unsatisfactory case. — Received and filed for reference. From Discharged Soldiers Information Department furnishing a list- of soldiers from the district who returned to the Dominion on the 22nd ulto. — Received. From Canterbury aPtriotic Association applying for temporary assistance for a returned soldier at present out of employment:, . The Secretary re- | ported having wired the Canterbury Association to grant assistance on our behalf. Moved by Mr Tennent seconded by ivfr McKay that the Secretary's action be unproved. — Carried. Fr.om Canterlmry Patriotic Fund enclosing application from returned soldier for £5 to reimburse him for expenses incurred in connection with Ms tuition as a chaffeur, he having being recommended by the Dr to engage in outside work. The Secretary reported having granted the amount. Moved by Mr McKay seconded by Mr McLean that the Secretary's action be endorsed. — Carried. From Canterbury Patriotic Fund acknowledging receipt of letter from Greymouth Association, disclaiming liability in connection with an advance to a returned soldier, as Grey did not consider themselves responsible and pointing out that the soldier had enlisted from this district in view of which they wished to know whether this Association was prepared to refund the amount. Mpved by Mr 'McLean and seconded by Mr Tennent that the amount be refunded. — Carried. ... [ if necessary.— Carried. s An .account for £7 Is 7d was passed for payment. j A patriotic distressing case in Greymouth was mentioned and on the motion of Mr Tennent seconded by Mr McLean the Secretary was empowered I to grant any assistance required. J The prospects of an early peace were discussed and the necessity of making necessary arrangements to fittingly celebrate the occasion. It ! was moved by Mr Tennent and seconded by Mr McLean that in the event of the Mayor being absent from town when the news comes through, Messrs i Wickes and McKay confer with the J Acting Mayor with a view to arrang- ; ing for the celebrations. — Carried. j This concluded the business.
