In the House of Representatives, Mr Watt, Acting Prem.er, in his Ministerial statement, foreshadowed increased taxation, the introduction of preferential voting, and action to secure equitable contributions to the war loans according to peoples' means. INCREASED TAXATION. MELBOURNE, September 18. The Federal Government proposes to increase the income tax 35 per cent., and the land tax 20 per cent. An additional half-penny war postage on letters will also be imposed. WOMEN BUS CONDUCTORS. SYDNEY, September 19. Women bus conductors have appeared in Sydney. Three are licensed. INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC. SYDNEY, September 19. Influenza in a severe form is prevalent throughout the Commonwealth. Public services and private firms are handicapped by the very large number of absentee victims.
