I IMPORTANCE OF THE ADVANCE. LONDON, September 17. \ General 31aun.ee' writes : General Pershmg's victory has altered the whoie character of the West Front in Fiance. The French are fighting on the Americans' lett and considerably progressed in the section of Etain. Therefore the front now runs one hundred miles in a .straight line in a south-westerly direction, from the north of Verdun to beypnd Luneville. General Foch can now make this new front an offensive front, when he desires. The Germans are now obliged actively to defend the direct railway communications beyond Metz and the north, and between Metz and Strassburg. More important still, they are obliged to protect the invaluable iron mines. Therefore the new front in . Woevre and Lorraine has become or the greatest importance to the enemy and can no longer be neld lightly.
