GERMAN RETREAT IN LORRAINE » NEW YORK, September 17. Reports from the American front state that the Germans are burning villages along the Mosselle, preparing for a further retreat. , (Rec. September 18, 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 17. Reuter's correspondent at the American Headquarters states: "Evidence is accumulating that the enemy intends to withdraw behind the Hindenburg lino in Lorraine, if he is further pressed. The enemy is burning the 'towns along the Moselle river, that are likely to fall into our hands, they include Dimmantin andKoobausse,' both of which are within the Hindenburg line. The Germans arranged for the Austrian troops to bear the brunt of the attack east of St Mihiel, and ordered them to hold us back until all the Germans had been withdrwn. - The Austria ns consequently suffered the heaviest. They especially lost in prisoners. The entire artillery — of the 31st German Division was captured.
