BOXING

NO. 3 QUEEN (RED AND GREEN.)

Thanks to the whole-hearted support of many of the leading local boxers, the Red and Green were able to provide a gem in the way of fistic entertainments at the Town Hall last Saturday Those who were present thoroughly appreciated the spirited exhibitions given, but a display that would have drawn crowded houses elsewhere, attracted only a moderate house on Saturday. The boxing was brisk and the competitors spared themselves as little, as if they had been boxing for substantial stakes, and not merely doing their bit for the benefit of our sick and wounded heroes. Every man was out to do his best and did it and the clever and fast work shown met with well merited applause at the end of each round. The opening bout between two lads T. O'Neill and R. Quinlan, showed ronsidernnle cleverness on the part of both. O'Neill, the more exppr'enrorf. giving a display of footwork, evasiveresa in defence, and skill in attack that should bring him into early promlnence. The next onconnter between thp v«terans L. Kinzett. Seriv.. a-nd "W. Mundy was a good solid struggle, both men putting up clean and skilful displays. full worthy of their wellestablished reputations. Two of the coming generation in Denny King and D. Costello then gave three determined rounds, tmd were both right into it from the first elancr of the gong. Both fought hnrd and both gave displays that promise well for their fntnre in the roped arena. Jack Griffen. the old master . then fanpd J. Steel for four rounds in which Steel gave a moat creditable di 1;---plav against one of the ..most hpnirjy and brainy boxers New Zealand has produced. Griffen, whose, appearance *ras greeted with applause, showed himself as skilful as e^er, ke»n +o make openings, for attack, and as elusive as a shadow in defence. The two clever Kinzett boys then put up a three round struggle of such a vigorous and exciting nature, that everyone was sorry when it was over. The two little chaps were at it-hammer and tons through the whole bout, no let-ups, but just one continuous go. The smaller boy's left was a treat to see and the skilful work of both boys reflects the greatest credit on the teaching capability of their father and instructor, Mr. L. Kinzett. Frank O'Neill, who so recently came into prominence, and who so far has been unable to find an opponent worthy of his steel, brought a most enjoyable evening to a close, by engaging W. Cadman for three rounds. This bout was a perfect treat, both men giving and receiving with right ' good will and putting as much vim and. excitement the contest as if boxing for keps, O'Neill was as quick a,nd active on his feet as ever, and gave a brilliant display against his skilful opponent, whose work both in | attack and defence, was high-class j throughout. A brilliant finish to a I first-class night's sport. - j

The Red and Green desire to thank those who made the tournament a success from a sporting point of view, the boxers, the Runanga Brass Band, the doorkeepers, and, last but not least, the officiating members of the Boxing Association. ; Business at the Red and Green was as brisk ever. Mrs. H. Nelson won the Poultry Competition.
