As the countess he rentß a large house near the Vandergcifts, leaders of society, and not far from the country club- Once fairly established Julian proceeds to make good a promise to .iSetty, his sweetheart, to collect a large sum for the JRed Cross. He tXeaTs one man's wallet, another's valuable scarf-pin, and from^"Mrs Vandergrif herself he' takes a priceless necklace of pearls. Also, as the countess he becomes friendly with hetty and proceeds tb Bing the praises of Julian Saunders so highly that Betty becomes jealous and afraid that after all, perhaps Julian doesn't care for her. The various thefts are soon discovered and a detective sent^to investigate. Suspicion points towards the unknown countess, and the evidence is strong enough to warrant her arrest. The countess gives a ball at the Country Club, and it is arranged that she shall be then arrested. Just as the officers are about to seize her, the countess^turns off the lights, and in the confusion, disappears — forever. Confusion, curiosity, and mystery — : .. where is the countess.
