DEEDS THAT WON THE COVETED HONOUR. In the reecntly-publishc.il list of men returning to New Zealand in the near future appears the name of SecondLieutenant S. Fri'ckleton. V.C., trie first winner of the Victoria Cross in the present war to return to these shores. This is the second time Lieutenant Priekleton has been invalided liome so that he has enjoyed the privilego of having enlisted twice voluntarily. The deeds which gained for him the coveted Cross, the highest distinction that, can be earned in the Army or Navy, were reported in our columns at the tinio of. their occurrence During the. Messines Battle in August last, the West Coast hero, although wounded whilst his section was temporarily cheeked by the heavy fire of the enemy/ clashed ahead and < pushed himself into the barrage.' He ] personally bombed and destroyed a S machine-gun which had boon causing heavy casualties. He then attacked a \ second machine-gun killing the crew of twelve, and turned the gun ©n ] to the German trenches, accounting for many German, dead, and undoubtedly'] saving his own and other units from | the severest casualties. In all, the Fricl-'°+n,i family ' has given five sons to the cau»« or tue Allies, one of whom. Private William I Priekleton was killed at the Battle of ( the Sr-mnie in 1916 and two others j have been badly wounded, and are now j' back in Nevy Zealand, Lieutenant ' Frickleton is returning to New Zealand on service. His sister's husband , Private Symons, of the Imperial Forces was killed at the Battle of the Aisne in ' 1914 . . I
