AUSTRIAN SEVERE LOSSES HINDENBURG 'S IDEA NOT HEEDED. (Rec. August 31, 9.50 p.m.) ROME, August 31. Mr. Julius Price, the official correspondent, says that the advance has given the Italians possession of 93 miles of splendid country, including t the strongest portion of the. Austrian lino on the Middle Isonzo. Already a great number of guns and a vast amiount of material have been captured, while prisoners in the enclosures total over two divisions. The important fact is that the victory is still unfinished. The Italians arc advancing with amazing rapidity and military highways are being constructed with lightning speed. .Guns, ammunition," and water "are Jjeing pushed forward over -the Bainsizza Plateau. The German newspapers assert that General von Hindenburg at a War Council urged that the plateau was untenable, but General Conrad insisted r.on the necessity of holding it at all costs, as it commanded a strategic line* between Tolmino and Gorizia.
