4. OBITUARY^ WELL-KNOWN JOURNALIST, (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 26. Obituary — William Lane; editor of the "New Zealand Herald." Mr. Lane was one uf the best known journalists in Australasia. He was aged so and was born at Bristol, England. At the age of 15 he migrated to America and apprenticed himself as a compositor, eventually entering the literary side of journalism. A few years . later he Avent to Brisbane, Queensland, Avhere he worked on the "Observer" and, associated/with Mr. Drake, afterwards Commonwealth Postmaster-General conducted a weekly paper, the ''Boomerang." He proved his adhesion to his own creed by resigning trom a lucrative position and establish ing the journal on co-operative lines, entitled the "Worker," which scored ■an instant success. Subsequent to the. industrial troubles of 18qo-2 he inaugurated ' the New Australia movement and Avent to Paraguy, returning" to Australia in ißqq. He became editor of the Sydney "Worker." but soon afterwards resigned on account of a disagreement with what he regarded a.s the unpatriotic attitude of the controlling body. He then came to Auckland and had sine" been connected with the "Herald." He succeeded the late Mr. S. Douglas as editor in 1913. His special articles under the pen-name of "Tphunga" were a feature of the "Herald's" Aveekly supplement, show ing deceased's command of a vigorous and flexible style, reflecting a virile personality and a wide and keen, yet sympathetic, ; knowledge of humanity. He is survived by-. Mrs Lane and five daughters, one of Avhom is married to Lieut. M. D. Rowan nOAV on service and one. son. The latter is on his Avav to the front. An elder son Corporal' Donald Lane was killed at the GalUppli landing. X
