The incomplete Referendum returns, including Queensland, are as follows: — X O .; BSS.2S3 Yes ••• 30«.4-~ ATTEMPT ON MR. HUGHES' , LIFE. MELBOURNE, October 30. The "Age" publishes a sensational account of a supposed attempt to assassinate the Hon. W: M. Hughes, who recently received over 100 threat erring letter's. It appears that a constable saw a man attempting to enter Mr. Hughes bedroom at mianight. The constable fired but missed the man, who escaped in the darkness. SOLDIERS' BALLOT YET TO COME FINAL RESULTS ON- lltli INST. (Reed. October 30, at 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Qetdber 30. The latest figures slightly increase the majority for "No" to 89,773... The final result of tho soldiers' ballot is not available until November 11th. POSITION OF THE STATES. WHERE VOTE IN FAVOUR CARRIED? SHOULD COMPULSION BE EN. FORCED (Reed. October 30, at. 9.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 30 The Assistant Minister of Defence, in discussing the referendum progress returns, said: "Judging from the preen t figures, I see no good reason why those States which voted "Yes," should not have compulsion applied to them."
