GERMAN COLUMN CAUGHT.
GERMAN ATTACKS REPULSED (Received April 12. 0.40 p.m.) PARIS, April 11. A communique states: North of the Aisne our artillery caught a' strong German column marching on the Chemin des Dames and inflicted serious losses. There was a somewhat intense bombardment of our Mort Homme-Cumi-eres front, but no infantry action. After violent artillery preparation, accompanied by an intense discharge of; tear shells, the Germans at four o'clock in the afternoon, strongly attacked between Douaumont and Vaux. They gained a footing in our advanced trenches, but were quickly driven out. Our air squadron bombed Mantillois and Brieulles stations and -also a long-range gun emplacement. SIR DOUGLAS HAIG'S REPORT SEVERE GRENADE FIGHTING ( Received April 12, Q. 40 a.m . ) LONDON, April 12. Sir Douglas Haig reports that grenade fighting for the craters east of St. Eloi continues with' varying fortunes.
