THE ALLIES' FAILURE.
A WAR CORRESPONDENT'S WARNING.
LONDON, December 27. In 'an article in the Sunday Times it is asserted that Mr Ashmead Bartlett at the end of May was sent home because of an outspoken despatch giving the; real position at the Dardanelles, which was not passed for publica- j ! tion. Mr Bartlett, when in Eng- ' ' land in September, saw several leading* members of the Cabinet and gave his views. He was requested to draw up a memorandum, in which he declared the position • a dangerous impasse. L'hey could not succeed frontally, and gas attacks might drive us intp the sea. He made alternative suggestions, which included the securing of Bulgaria's co-opera-tion and a landing at Bulair. Mr Bartlett, after the failure at Suvla, in defiance of the censorship, sent a strong letter to Mr Asquith by a courier, denouncing; the conduct of the expedition. The British Consul at Marseilles seized the letter. Mr Bartlett' s connection with the Dardanelles ceased a few days later on the in structions of the War Office.
