ESCAPED A SUBMARINE.
PASSENGER .STEAMER'S EXPERI I ENCE. AMSTERDAM, February 12. The U2 on Wednesday shelled the steamer Laertes off Maas Lightship. The captain raised the Dutch flag to protect many neutral passengers. Me sent the steamer ahead at full speed and escaped the submarine, which tired a torpedo fruitlessly. PRZEMYSL IN EXTREMIS. TURKISH TRANSPORT SUNK. The High Commissioner reports from London under date of February 12th, 4.45 D.m., as follows : — "Paris reports that south of La Boiselle the Germans exploded a mine at the ex* tremity of the Allies' trench, but the Allies still hold the trench. "Petrograd reports that the Russians' falling back movement was necessary to assure the possibility of rearranging the troops and effecting greater concentration in order to deal with the four new Prus= sian army corps. The object was best attained in Russian territory in the shelter of their own fortresses. It is presumed that the eve of great operations, which ought to definitely decide the struggle in Eastern Prussia, has arrived. Circum= stances demand the strict necessity of keeping the operations secret. "Following on twenty=two ineffectual attempts the Germans succeeded in occupy^ ing the heights of Koziomoka with a large force after a sanguinary attack, but were dislodged after a fierce bayonet fight, leaving 400 dead. "The garrison at Przemysl is exhausting itself with vain sorties. ; "In the Black Sea the Russians sunk a Turkish transport with 900 tons of provi= sions."
