POWER HOUSE- DAMAGED. GISBORNE IN DARK-NESS . BY TELEGUAPH— PER PRESS ASSOCIATIONGISBORNE. February 14. A fire a. t the Municipal Power House at 8 o'clock on Saturday night plunged the town in darkness, many of the largest shops having recourse to candles! while the picture theatres were unable to show An hour later temporary repairs enabled the lights to be switched on again, and permanent repairs were effected this morning. The damage is not very heavy, and is covered by insurance in. the South British Office. BREWERY DAMAGED. At an eaUly hour this morning a fire broke out in D. J. Barry's Brewery, the packing shed being complete ly" destroyed, while the pasteurising room and bottling department eusitained damage. The loss in bottles, corks, capsules, labels and machinery is heavy. . 180 cases of beer packed for export were destroyed, and a similar quantity unpacked was also lost.. The insurances on this section of the brewery are ,£7OO on the building, and. £2100 on the stocks and machinery in various offices,. It is impossible to estimate the dam age as yet. But for the brigade's good work the whole of the brewery would have gone.
