FATAL ACCIDENT
AT NOBTH BROTHER MINE
EXPLOSION OF GELIGNITE
An accident, attended with fatal results, occurred at the North Brunner mine on Thursday. It appears that a man named Donald McJMahoii was working in the mine and had been employed building a "chock." or what is more familiarly known, in mining parlance, as a pigstye — the erection of timber to support a roof — and was working alone at the time of the accident. The injuries received were of a serious nature and are believed to have been caused through an explosion of gelignite, although the management had no knowledge of such an- explosive being used in the mine. • .
The injured man, who was found at a distance from the place at which he was supposed to have been working, was brought to Greymouth by special train shortly. afser»2 p.m., but he died about 10 o'clock last night. The deceased, who was about 35 years of age, leaves a wife and , three children to mourn their loss. Mrs McMahon is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs Jos; McEwan of Itunanga, and Mrs Gumming, of Kotuku, is a sisler to the deceased.
The news of the accident caused quite a painful shock to the residents of the district, the late Mr. McMahon being highly esteemed, and sincere sympathy is felt for the bereaved relatives.
