OBITUARY
JOHN DOWLING JPAROA). Another of the grand band of early pioneers has passed away in the per son of John Dowlinpr. a very okl and highly respected resident of Paroa. Deceased was one of those who took part in the Otavo gold rushes, being a>. Gabriel's Gully in the early sixties. He next landed in Hoki'cika in 1864, being one of the pioneers, of the West Coast goldfields,' eventually/, settling in Paroa. wher he lived with his family. for close on half a century- His v/ife died some few years back, and the deceased leaves a family of one son and our daughters to mourn the loss of a true and devoted fatheT. Two daughters (Hannah a.nd Agnes), live at home, whilst Mrs. H. Smith is postmistress at Woolston. Christchurch. and Mrs. Jones lives at. Westport. A brother of deceased (Michael) also liv es at Paroa. The late Mr. Dowling was universally respected by all who knew him, and his many friends can bear ample testimony to his generosity and kindness of heart. He was one of Nature's gentlemen and was always ready to assist the distressed and needy. The deceased, who was a native of Tipperary, Ireland, had been in failing health for some months and his end came peacefully last even 'ng at the ripe old age of 81 ye.'irs. To the bereaved, relatives the svmnathy of a large circle of friends v : ll be extended and many will regret the loss of a true and devoted friend.
