THE NO CONFIDENCE DEBATE

A LACK OF INTEREST.

CERTAIN GOVERNMENT VICTORY. \ '

(Our Parliamentary Reporter)?,

By Telegraph. — Special to "Argus."

WELLINGTON, July 1. • The no confidence debate is arousing little interest, and the object of the Opposition does not seem to be at all warranted by the results. Indeed, so far they have had all the worst of the debate, and even from Opposition! side there has come a strong commendation of the naval ■'•ndey of the Government as against !m of Sir Joseph Ward. Mr. Myers's explanation of his ideas in retrard to ;naval policy were, applauded by the Government supporters., "' ' \' The general opinion in Wellington undoubtedly is: that Mr. Allen last nitfht by- his brilliant speech quite cut Hie.. ground from under the feet of the Opposition Leader. The Post, which is an Independent paper, with decided leanings towards Liberalism, says that Sir Joseph's cross cotmtry runs in the recess { were tfpod for his health, but they have: not helped to put any force into his po-li-ilcal punch. . Post describes Sir Joseph V.ru^'js' speech as stale and ; unprofitqibleij and says that "while Sir Joseph Had the forcible manner Mr. Allen; had tHe .forcible matter — bullets \\fhich found a billet. is not difficult to prove, 3 ' Adds the Post, "thit the Massey Goicernment is a mere raw amateur compared with such a well practised shirker :and scuttler as the Ward Government was notoriously. The heraldic arms of; the Ward Government could have been fairly a pair or two pairs of legs." i. At present there are a few members from both s ide<; away from the House, and Messrs D.s Buddo (Opposition; andi Newman (Government) are returnmer to New Zealand on the same steam er. ■ The result of the division will' probably be in favor of the Govcmnjorft •" a majority of from seven to .nirin
