Mr J. G. HaTkness, secretary to the National Dairy Association, Avho has rre'centjy visited England, in .gnving his opinion as *o necessary improvements in the da : xy produce trade, advocated the establishment by G-overnmenit of a properly qualified flaiboratory and ©xperimenta.l station presided . over .by a competent chemist If there were any defects in the produce they should be traced to tneir souirce, but this was the only way it could 'be properly done. He also considered ithat *he Government should •be asked to approach . the United States with a, view to obtaiiTn>ng some concessions in respect to fhe heavy embargo at present existin.o: ag-ainst dairy produce, ' as there , were elements of ; a' lutraitive and increasing trade. A further suggest"lon_ was for adverfcfisiing ait Home, the cost of which choui'd be shared by the expoxiters as well as their London agents and still another was the adoption of a universal .brand, "N. Z Produce," wi^h a registered for identification, to 'replace the present undesirable mu'lltiplkity of 'brands. The standard should 'be maintained by not allowing anything to be exported that was below it, for every box lof Gutter or cra^e of cheese not up to standard was a menace to New Zeailand's position and good name.
