THE KUMARA WATER RACE.
(Our Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, Nov 23 Some days ago Mr Guinness asked the Minister of Mines —
(1/ Why the Government is importing the necessary material, pipes, etc required for the construction of the Kumara water race ready for putting together in the Dominion; and
(2)' What' is the reason for having these pipes made by day labour instead of calling for tenders for the work?
To-day the Hon'R. McKenzie replied that the material being imported for the Kumara water race extension consists almost entirely of iron plates, angle irons,' and flexible joints, none of which are manufactured 1 in the Dominion, and consequently must be imported. The. work in this syphon is 'o? a special nature, therefore h is considered to be expedient and more economical to have the work done by day labour instead of contract.
