THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM IN ENGLAND The Newport Match. 4. Hard Fought Game. Colonials Fall Off in Second Half Wallace's Splendid Play. (Per Press Association.) SYDNEY. Jan 29.
The Daily Mail says :— Either the ' all blacks " are meeting foemen in South Wales i&v more worthy of their steel than they have met elsewhere ; or else the strain of their tremendous tour is beginning to tell its inevitable tale. They were hard put to it at Newport. The visitors left by far the hardest and most difficult part of their task to the end of the tour. It i* asking too much of even so wonderful a football phalanx as they undoubtedly are, that, after a protracted and ex« hausting experience of hard fought encounters, they should retain all their pristine freshness. There was little to choose between the teams. Newport, so far as the actual balance of play went, might have won just as well as the New Zealanders. For the firsb twenty I minutes of the opening half, tlte visitors bad pretty much their own way. After two fine efforts to score Roberts set the other wing in motion. The ball come from Stead to Deans to Harper. The latter swerved most artistically round Griffiths and scored the first and only try of the game. Harper {ailed to convert, but a few minutes later Wallace dropped a magnificent penalty kick from nearly half way. It seemrd as if the colonials were contented with this advantage for they were seldom d ngerous afterwards. In proportion as they fell off, the Newport team improved >n<l in the" second half Usksiders Avert- in their opponents' territory mqst of i: •«•■ time and the colonials were loi't;"!! ' in possessing a lead of s'x i <.>\»\>. Wallace's coolness and splendid kicking saved his side from disaster mope than once. Roberts, Seeling, Tyler and Mynot played a great defensive game.
