Cook of the Schooner Lizzie Taylor Drowned

A sad accident occurred about 3 40 p m yesterday, by which a man named Thos Wyatt, who was cook and seaman on the schooner Lizzie Taylor, lying alongside the wharf opposite the Caledonian Hotel, fell overboard and was drowned. Deceased was 44 years of age and a native of Bathursr. He joined the vessel at Wanganui on the 3rd inst. The master of the schooner saw him the worse for drink in the street, opposite the vessel, about 3 30 pm. No person s- ems to have seen him go aboard. The s s Corinna lay below the schooner about 20 feet. Captain Miliman and the assistant harbor master, Mr McPherson, were walking along the wharf when Captain Miliman noticed a man in the river half way between his vessel and the schooner. He then seemed to be trying to swim. He at once gave the alarm, shouting "There is a man overboard." Both jumped on board the schooner and lowered a boat that was tied alongside. McPher>en and another man jumped into the boat and Capt Miliman let go the painter, bub nothing was seen of the drowning man after. Mr Widdewson Tate, 3rd mate of the s 3 Corinna, when the alarm was given at once threw a rope near the head of the drowning man, but he seemed to be too far gone and' made no attempt to catch ifc and sank almost immediately. So far ib seems that no person saw him going on the vessel, or falling 0$ no one being on the vessel at the time.
