THE MARINE SCANDAL.

[per press association].

Wellington, April 20. After Gully opened the case the Premier was called first to enable him to get away to the West Coast. The point in his evidence was that the only application of Jones's he had ever heard of up to leaving for England was for what is known as a service certificate, and this he thought and still thought, he Avas subject to satisfactory proof of servi& The Customs objected because they, had\o records of service in other respects. Jones was fully qualified before leaving for England in April, 1897. He wired to the Minister of Marine to have the question settled as he thought Jones was entitled to what he wanted and much more qualified than certain names mentioned. Captains Allman and Fairchild also spoke highly of Jones. Did not know that Jones had presented Hmself for examination for a master's certificate till sometime after he ! 1 came back, or in fact till Hutchison made J ; his speech in the House. | Argument on the motion for an injunction to restrain Captain Jones from .using a master's certificate was continued this afternoon, Messrs Glasgow and Al*

port of the Customs Department and Captain Edwin, one of the examiners, were the only witnesses examined. Their evidence was mainly a repitetion of what took place in the former case against Captain Allman. The respondent, Jones, was called but it appears he had not been served with a notice to appear and the court adjourned until to- morrow, when Captain Jones will be in attondawco and the Hon Hall-Jones, Minister of Marine, will also be examiued.
