THE WAIRARAPA INQUIRY.
(per press association ) Welungton, November 19. Mr W F Wheeler, local manager of the Union Company, examined befo r e the magistrate in connection with the Wairarapa disaster, when asked if he knew of any instructions to captains to make fast passages in view of the opposition, replied that he was unaware of any, and said the company thonght lit le of opposition, there being ©nly one vessel running. So far as he knew the general instructions of ' the comrany to captains provided for blowing the fog horn in a fog. The g- nsral nrmager would be the proper gentleman to examne as to instructions. Witness had known Capt. M'lntosh for ten years, and regarded him as a careful and capable officer. Witness declared that whether the captain made fast or slow passages it did nob affect his promotion in the company. Auckland, November 19. At the Wairarapa enquiry Samuel Allen, captain's steward, deposed that Captain M'lntosh had not been so eheerf al since his illness last August. On Sunday the captain had breakfast, but no other meal. The captain told him to at end to the pissangers. When the ship Btrack the captain was perfectly nober. He did not drink to excess. Witness helped the chief officer, but could not r annch the boat. He wa<3 directed by Moyen to bring the ladies to the p^rt boats. While doing so witness and a number of women were washed overboard.
