THE CANTERBURY RACES.
SECOND DAY. Christchurch, April 27. The second day of the C. J.C. Autumn meeting was favored with beautiful weather, but as a general holiday ifc was not observed. The attendance was not remarkably large. The following are the results : — HURDLE RACE HANDICAP, A sweepstake of five soys. each, with 100 added ; once round and a distance. Mr G. Rutherford's Peter Osbeck, lOst. 51b 1 Mr Gordon's Garibaldi, list. 21b. ... 2 Mr H. Lunn's b g Kingask, lOst. 121bs. 3 Master Agnes, Borclerman, Panic, and Temuka also ran. The race was won by half-a-length. Divs., L 2 3s and L 7 15a. AUTUMN NURSERY HANDICAP, A sweepstake of five soys. each, with 200 boys. added ; for two-year-olds; five furlongs. Mr E. Lyon's First Lord, by Albany — Fallacy, Bst. 71b 1 Mr E. Cutts's Galatea, by Apremont — Nautilus, Bat. 21b 2 Mr H. Piper's Mirelle, by Hornby — Mirelle, 6at. 101 b 3 Disowned, Artillery, Tarantalus, and Nourmahal also ran. Longwaist was scratched. First Lord ran a waiting race till a couple of furlongs from home, when he was let out, and won. In the commonest of canters by a couple of lengths. Galatea,
Mirelle, Artillery, Tarantalus, Nourmahal and Disowned followed in that order. Time, lmin. |sec. Divs.,L3 13s and L 3 11s. THE CHALLENGE STAKES, A sweepstake of 10 soys. each, with 300 soys. added, the second horse 50 soys., third 20 soys. from Btake ; weight for age ; six furlongs. Mr Lyons's First Lord, Bst. 21b ... 1 Mr H. Hammond's Rocket, 9at. 71b ... 2 Mr H. Goodman's Apropos, 7st. 91b ... 3 Russley, July, Tasmania, and Fair Nell alao ran. Artillery and Nourmahal were scratched. On the fall of the flag July took the lead, but was quickly collared by First Lord, who entered the straight a length ahead of Rocket, July, and Apropos at the latter's heels. First Lord then had matters his own way, and won in a canter by two lengths from Rocket, the same distance separating the latter and Apropos, July, Tasmania, Fair Nell, and Russley followed home in that order. Time, lmin. 16|seca. ; divs., L 4 12s and L 6 la. THE EASTER HANDICAP, A sweepstake of 5 soys. each, with 250 aovs. added ; for three-year-olds and upwards ,* second horse £50, third 20 boys. from the stake ; one mile. The Hon. W. Reeves's Maligner, Bst. 121 b ... 1 Mr P. Butler's Tit Bit, 7st. 121 b ... 2 Mr H. Hammond's Rocket 3 Captain Webster, Marion, Jack, Spade Guinea, Athol Daisy, and Madonna also ran. Tit Bit led all the way, but when fairly in the straight Maligner was let out, and won as he liked by a clear length from Tit Bit, who beat Rocket by a neck for second money. Captain Webster was fourth, followed by Jack, Marion, Madonna, Athol Daisy, and Spade Guinea. Time, lmin. 4|secs. Diva., L 3 173 and L3l9a6d. The Selling Race of 100 soys. waß won by Mr Stead's Vinaigrette, beating fiye others, and the Consolation by Marion.
