COUNTY COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the County Council was held last evening at the County Chambers. Present — Crs Warren (chairman), Clifford, Foley, Parfitt, M'Kechnie, Ryall, Guinness, Marshall, Taylor. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The by-law re licensing pedlars and hawkers within the county was adopted. At eight o'clock the Council proceeded with Charitable Aid Board business, the following representative of the Borough Council being present : — Messrs Lahman, Sheedy, Cameron, and Nancarrow. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from M. Kennedy accepting the appointment of representative of the County on the Charitable Aid Board read and received. Mr Clifford expressed his satisfaction at the action of the Borough Council in withdrawing their appeal against the originally proposed scale of contribution to the Hospital ; and he expressed his conviction that the contributions from the country would be fully, or nearly so at an y rate, as liberal as ever they were. Letter from the Caversham Industrial School asking for fees for the maintenance of four indigent children forwarded from Greymouth to that institution. — Mr Clifford moved that consideration be ! deferred until the next meeting of the Board. — Mr Ryall seconded. — Carried. Letter from the Secretary applying for certain necessary articles, such as a seal for the Board and a box to keep the books and papers of the Board in. — Mr Lahman seconded. — Resolved that the Board have a common seal, &c. i The report of the Finance Committee I was read and adopted. It was stated that ! the manager of the Bank of New Zealand had kindly consented to grant ah overdraft of £500 to the Board should it be | necessary. The Council then resumed. Or Clifford moved that the regular course of business be altered. — Mr Guinness moved as an addition that the Council receive a deputation from Dobson in relation to streets.— Amendment carried. The deputation from Dobson was then introduced. The spokesman (Mr Foster) said that the Dobson settlers thought it a great hardship that they Bhould be asked to pay a third of the co3t of making the streets asked for, inasmuch as they were mere leaseholders, and the Government were at libeifcy to resume possession. They pointed out the work they expected the Council to do at their own cost. Having laid their case before the Council they withdrew. A motion to adjourn at 9.25 was negatived by the casting vote of the chairman. After a good deal of discussion some of the councillors withdrew, and it ' was resolved that the meeting be adjourned until 2.30 p.m. to-day. j
