The report of the Finance Committee wa? read and adopted. t, -A quantity of inward correspondence was read. Cr Guinness moved that the Council is willing to divert a sum of £533 from the vote for prospecting tracks for the formation of a track from Limestone to Maori j • Creek. — Cr M'Kechnie seconded.— Cr Clifford also supported the motion, which . was agreed to. Cr Parfitt moved as an amendment that Government be requested to divert £500 i|pf the money for opening the Teremakau • t^B|U Hill road for the Hatters Terrace roacupTjCr Marshall seconded.— Cr Clifford opposed it. He would be acting very improperly towards his constituents if he did not oppose it. — The amendment was rejected by the casting vote of the Chairman. 4Cr Clifford moved that the Chairman to apply to Government for * r " ;the construction of a road to Hatters Tervrace. — Carried . Some correspondence in reference to Hatters Terrace was read and received. Letter from J, W. Parkinson asking the ■'"£ Council to remove an obstruction in the ; ? ; shape of a fence from his property at Wallsend. — Cr Guinness moved that the Road Overseer be instructed to ascertain if the statement is correct, and, if so to take steps for its removal. — 'Carried. Application received from Mr Armstrong to lay down a temporary tram on the Coal Creek road.— Leave granted conditionally, subject' to the Road Overseer approving of the work, and that Armstrong remove the work when required. " On the motion of Cr Marshall it was resolved to instruct the Road Overseer to survey and lay off the Ahaura Cemetery, and add a couple of acres additional ground to it. ,-3/ -Letter from David Donald declining to into partnership" with the County '^Council, on the ground that he was paying Tates enough for the Council to construct the road wanted. — Letter received. Letter from Timothy Mullins applying for compensation for doing extra work on his contract to the amount of £18 10. — Referred to the Road Overseer. Letter from Mr Browning in reference, to te Brunnerton riding boundary. — Received. Letter from H. J. Wylde applying for the job of surveying the road; from Grey Valley to Teremakau. — Received. Letter from ThomasSyiTompkies irij reference to certain land in/his occupation^ Received and referred to a committee of the whole Council. / Letter from Thomas Joyce asking the Council to keep the road between his brewery and the road in repair. —Resolved that the Road Overseer be instructed to see the work carried out. :, Letter from Thomas Higgina and John : ..-./.3S" w O i wb_i.frh'Btating that they would hold the g?> I^Souiicil responsible for any damage done ;-■' to their race by the stringers of the No Town, bridge. — Received. An opinion from the 'solicitor lo the Council as to the damage done to John Gal way by divesting the water in Wards Gully from its natural course, was read. It stated that the Council was liable for j any damage done, to Galway's land.— Resolved that the Overseer be directed to clear out the slu-lge channel and arrange with the settlers for keeping it clear in future ; and in the event of not coming to terms with Mr Gal way, Mr Higgins report upon the advisability of constructing a channel through the road reserve. Mr James Payne was appointed returniner officer for the licensing committees. Further correspondence was adjourned to a later period of the sitting. The report of the Road Overseer was ! read. Resolved that the Road Overseer be

nstructed to call for tenders for gravellin the walks in the Brunnerton cemetery. Regarding protection to the Greenstone road, Cr Foley said it was absolutely necessary that something be done for the protection- of the road st once. — Cr Clifford moved that the Road Overseer be instructed to go to an expenditure of not more than £40 for the protection of the road. — Carried. Resolved that the Council expend £10 on widening the track (about three chains) at Mr Mitchell's. Letter from R. Nancarrow, on behalf of the Coal Pit Heath Company, granting leave to the Council to use a gravel pit on their property. The Chairman moved that in the event of Government not making a deviation in the Marsden Hill road, that the recommendation of the Road Overseer for improving the grade and cutting off the worst points be given effect to.— Cr Clifford hoped that the matter would be allowed to .stand over until such time as application was made to Government.— Motion withdrawn. Touching the tramway laid down on the Coal Creek road, Cr Ryall moved that the recommendation of the Road Overseer with reference to the same be given effect to, and that the Chairman be instructed to write to the Minister of Mines for the £804 . voted last session for the SevenMile road (Cobden to Seventeen Mile), for expenditure on that road. — Cr Marshall seconded. — Carried. Or Clifford moved that the Road Overseer be instructed to visit No Town at an early date and report as to the cost of protective works on that creek.— Carried. In reference to Mr O'JReilley's claim for compensation for increased traffic on the Maori Gully road, consideration was postponed until the completion of the contract for the maintenance of the road. Cr Ryall moved that the deviation of the road at Canoe Creek, as recommended by the Road Overseer, be given effect to. —Seconded by Cr Clifford, and carried. The Road Overseer reported that according to the specifications he did not consider Mr Mullins was entitled to any compensation. — Crs Marshall and Parfitt said that the slips on the road were very heavy indeed. — Cr Marshall moved that Mr Mullins be granted £18 10s for damage sustained by floods and slips.— Carried. Mr Phillips's report as to the sanitary condition of Taylorville was read. It stated that the sanitary condition of the I place was in a very bad state. Wallsend : also was without proper closet accommodation.—Cr Parfitt moved that the Education Commissioners be requested to remedy the disgraceful state of the school closets.— Cr M'Kechnie seconded. — Cr ' Clifford moved as an amendment that Mr Phillips's sanitary report be given effect to, and that the necessary steps be taken under the Act to remedy the state of things complained of. — Seconded by Cr Ryall. — The amendment was carried. The Council adjourned at 4.40 to 7.30 the same evening. ( To be continued.)
