Sydney, November 13. Ministers are perfecting their arrangements for the meeting of Parliament. The Hon. George Thornton has joined the Government as Minister of Mines. This came as a surprise, as Mr Thornton had long ceaaed to take an active part in public life. There are most conflicting accounts as to the strength of parties, but the general impression is that 'the"Government will not stand long after the House meets. The report of the murder of the exploring party in New, Guinea was. brought to Cooktown by two • Papuans. The party had a small steam launch and some boats. The Papuans state that they came down the Fly River by night, they being the only two who escaped. The party consisted of thirteen Europeans and eleven Malays; all were armed. Owing to the Insurance Companies increasing their risks for mercantile warehouses, a new Mercantile Insurance Company is projected. The labor market is in an unsettled-s--tate. ':*p The cooks and stewards ot the Ly-e---moon left the^steamer because they heard a steward waiielischarged. The wharf labourers decline 4o r work on the Tasmanian Company's boa ; ts unless they are paid for smokie'time. The Lambton Colliery strike is over.
