"The result of the further analysis of these waters shows that the water taken from the Grey river is decidedly the best for domestic purposes. The analysis of No. 3 and 4 proves that it maintains its purity both at high and low water. It was found to be absolutely devoid of those nitrogenous or albuminoid matters, which are the most dangerous of all forms of organic matter, as being necessary for the propagation of disease by putrefactive f ernien tation. " The quantity of oxygen required to oxidise all the more easily oxidisable matters contained in a gallon of this water, as collected at high and low water is "0181 and "0126 grains respectively, which is less than is required for any of the other samples, and also much less than is required for most drinking waters. The following table gives the quantity and nature of the salts contained in one gallon of this water (No. 3) taken from the Grey River at low water : — " Chloride of Sodium 6 64 \ Chloride of Calcium 311 , Sulphate of lime 1-04 ! Sulphate of Magnesia 2 69 ! Alumina and iron oxides traces ! Carbonate of lime 2*14 ' Carbonate of Magnesia -25 Silica 219 18-06 "Organic matters 2 09 grains per j gallon.
