AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
(Received October 13, at 13.30 p.m.) RIOTS BETWEEN NAVVIES AND POLICE. Sydney, October 13. An affray took place last night near Newcastle between a body of navvies and a number of police. The situation eventually became so serious that the police were compelled to ,fire upon the assailants, wounding several, one seriously. MORE TAXATION UNNECESSARY. The Hon. G. P. Dibbs, Colonial Treasurer, when addressing a public meeting last night, stated that although the estimates of the Government in regard^ to. revenue had not been realised, still it would not be necessary to impose fresh taxation.
