THE LAST VICTIM OF NELSON CREEK.

[prom a correspondent.] The death by drowning of Mr Robert McAllister has cast a gloom over this district that it will take some time, to remove. He was one of Nelson Creek's most notable residents, having lived in this district for the last 16 years. Poor fellow ! he was the soul of honor. No person- was better respected, nor is : there any person that deserved it better. He never was so happy as when he was doihg : good. He took a lively interest ;in all charitable scatters, particularly so in the Grey River Hospital. He was a member of the last local committee, and was never tired of advocating the cause of that institution. Your Ahaura correspondent was in error in saying that he took a very prominent part in political matters— J that is if he means the deceased gentleman's interest in politics, such as it was, was ever carried to improper lengths ; because he was no zealot. For your correspondent's information, allow me, as one of his oldest friends, to inform him that the part he took in political matters was in keeping with all the actions of his life. He was: manly, straightforward, aad above •board. In order to show the respect the deceased gentleman was held in, I may state that every person in this district followed his remains to the place of interment. Even the little children followed as a mark of respect for a man that they looked up to and respected. The funeral left Mrs Hunter's hotel on Thursday morning, followed by the largest concourse of people I have seen up the Valley. The funeral service was very impressively read by the Rev. Mr Westbrook, from Greymouth. Before closing this letter, I have been requested by the late respected gentleman's friends to publicly thank Mrs Hunter for taking the place of his absent and only sister. I therefore in behalf of these friends thank in the warmest manner that respected lady. . In conclusion, I would once more draw the County Council's attention to this matter. It is well known that a thousand pounds would make a good road on the south side of Nelson. Creek. Why does the Council hesitate ? Why not call a special meeting and have this work in hand at once ? What is this paltry amount to the death of three of Nelson Creek's best residents? It is to be hoped that the Council will move in this matter before any more is added to the number.
