CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

[to the editor.] Sir, — The late hon. treasurer says that the balance sheet has been ready to audit for months. He must be aware that it is so much wate piper to the public while it remains unaudited and kept in the archives of the County Council. I would not venture to inspect the balance sheet, and thus satisfy my "curiosity" by interruptingsuch an important functionary in his own office, more especially as it seems I have already ruffled his feathers. I sympathise with the officers of the Caledonian Society in their inability to raise money to pay the auditor's fee. The auditor might do this work in the hope that the subject would be sufficiently amusing and instructive to reward him for the trouble. By the way, does the balance sheet show the number of members enrolled, those who paid subscriptions, and those who did not pay. Let the society collect arrears from members and then I think they will not be able to make the excuse that they have no money to pay the auditor and print the accounts.— I am &c, Ped.

Legal Lore in Texas.— A man was recently examined at Galveston for a license to practise law. "In order to constitute a last will what is essential ?" asked the lawyer who was questioning the applicant. " A corpse and some property are all that is necessary," was the reply.
