THE TEMPERANCE CONGRESS.
At the Temperance Congress the following new delegates were present :— Rev. J. A. Luxford, Kaiapoi ; Mr Ross, Invercargill j. Mr. Eyre, Wellington ; Rev J. A. Torrance, South Dunedin ; Rev. Riley, Port Chal.ners ; Mr A. J. Bennett, Wellington ; Mrs Howe, Kaikoura ; Mrs Ben net, Wellington ; Mr Puckard, Nelson ; Mr H. Flockton, Wellington. Resolved that the proposed alliance be called the New Zealand Alliance for the promotion °t temperance and the suppression of the liquor traffic. That the said alliance consist of all persons favorable to the above object who shall give in their names and pay an annual subscription of not less than 53 per annum and all members of affiliated societies. That any Society may affiliate by paying the sum of 20s per annum and an additional 20s for each extra delegate sent to the annual meeting. That the annual meeting of delegates be held, each affiliated society being entitled to the election of one delegate for each gu : nea contributed to the funds of the alliance ; provided that in no caae shall there be more than one delegate for each 100 members or fractional part thereof ; and thac the meeting elect a President and Governing Board. That the foregoing resolutions be forwarded to every known temperance organisation of New Zealand ; and that they be requested to elect delegates to meet in Wellington on or about the 25th of January next to formally inaugurate the Alliance. A preliminary executive was appointed to make the necessary arrangements for that meeting. The Chairman, Mr Harding, announced his intention of paying the whole of the expenses of the present Congress. After votes of thanks the Congress terminated.
