A GLOVE FIGHT.
The West Coast Times gives the following particulars regarding the glove fight for the championship and ,£2O aside between R. Matthews, champion of New Zealand, and John O'Neil, of Ross. It came off at the Theatre on Saturday evening last, there being a crowded house. After some minor lights in the fistic art had disported themselves, the match for the championship took place. The terms were to fight to a finish, Marquis of Queensberry rules. Mr T. Macfarlane who was chosen referee, read the rules. Mr J. Lynch was timekeeper, Mr JBreeze seconded O'Neil and Mr Sheedy performed the same office for Matthews. Both men were cheered on entering the ring. It was apparent that Matthews had great advantage in weisrht and condition. O'Neil looked well, but seemed to understand that he had a heavy job before him. There was a sameness about the first two rounds almost entirely on the defensive. O'Neil sparred very nicely, but his blows lacked weight. In the fifth, sixth, and last round Matthews showed the power and rapidity of his hitting. He repeatedly knocked O'Neil down, who, however, came to time with remarkable pluck and endurance, and fought throughout very scientifically. The fifth and sixth rounds were particularly lively. The seventh and last round was commenced with vigor by Matthews, who was as fresh as a daisy, while O'Neil was clearly weakening. Early in the round Matthews knocked O'Neil down twice. After the second fall, O'Neil failed to come to time, and the referee awarded the fight to Matthews, amid much applause. Cheers were also given for O'Neill, who, though overmatched, fought with spirit and skill. The affair was carried out very well, and the exhibition was most interesting, and free from any sign of brutality. O'Neil was none the worse ten minutes after the battle. Had he been in better condition, it is probable the fight would have lasted longer.
