This delay, although perhaps unavoidable in the circumstances, is still very much to be regretted, as there are already a great many men in town without employment. The harbor works attracted twice the men here that were required to fill every opening. Mr Beeche has obtained an injunction from Mr Warden Bird against the Fiery Cross Extended Company for improperly permitting water to run to waste from Boatman's Creek,' whereby the . applicant was prejudiced. It is some eight or nine years since the Baldwins visited New Zealand, though a visit to the West Coast was omitted from their itinerary on that occasion. The Professor must have pleasant recollections of that tour. It was a veritable showman's I Lriumph all through — big houses, big business, and generally speaking he had a high' olditime from a professional point of view. It was a hew thing, and wherever the Professor billed in the colonies, eager crowds poured their money into Eis lap. Although the role, of the Professor has lost the novelty that. was then its bloom, it will still attract thousands, who cannot help going to speculate and wonder at the strange power which enables one person to read what is in the mind of another and perform many other mysterious tricks — for after al they" are neither more or less \ than tricks — that the great mass of the [ people camiot at all fathom or comprehend. As the professor has never visited this part of the coast before, he ought to be able to* count upon bumper houses during the two nights he is to stay. He promises novelties never seen in the colony before. The company open this evening at the Public Hall. The fourth number of " Once a Month" for this year is to hand. It is a most interesting number, containing several very readable and timely articles. There is a welcome sketch of Adam Lindsay Gordon, the Australian poet, with two lithograph sketches, one being from the hand and memory of a friend, the other from a photographic likeness. " Personal recollections "of General Gordon " will meet with that attention that anything re- ' latingto the lamented hero is certain to meet with. Besides the heavier class of literary pabulum, there is the lighter and fragmentary jottings of monthly notes, and otheVentertaining matter. The Minister of Justice and AttorneyGeneral have been engaged lately ingoing over draft bills and suggestions from the judges on the subject of the new Local Courts Bill. It is thought, therefore, that the Local Courts Bill of next* session will propose more startling reforms connected with the administration of justice than the Local Courts Bill introduced by the previous administration, and which has been before the House for several sessions, though without reaching Committee. ; His Honor Judge Broad was a passenger , by ; - the s. s. False Pretences Exposed.— There is an unusual revival of doubtful industry at the present time among the gentry who sell imported or other health-destroying compounds as identical with or similar to that benign medical elixir, Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps. Purchasers should ask for and only take the original article. — Advt. Poisons to Disguise.— There are poisons labelled as such, and there are compounds which, although claimed to possess medical properties, are scarcely less destructive than poison. To this latter class belong all counterfeits and imitations of Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps, and the bogus importations which^ also pretend to its health-giving properties. Beware these would be rivals of the great elixir. — Advt. -
