Ceanavau.— A velocipede was invented by Blanchard, the aeronaut in 1779, and one was invented by Nicephore Niepce in 1818. The " dandy-horse," a velocipede, was patented in Paris and. London for Baron vbn Drais, in 1818. These machines came again into use in 1861, and since 1867 they; have. been very common under various forms termed bicycles and tricycles .■;.", the chief inventor of which, James Starley, an ingenious mechanic of Albourne, .Sussex, was buried at. Coventry in 18*1. Mr Stahtpn went from London to Bath, 106 miles, on a bicycle in 1874 ; and ever since that time the bicycle seems to have grown in popular favor,.
