COUNTY ENGINEER APPOINTMENT.

[TO. THE EDITOR.] - Sir, — Observing from the Argus yesterday that the' Grey County Council intend settling the question of appointing a county engineer at their meeting on the 29th inst, I cannot help referring them to - a paragraph in the Australasian of Decem- - ber 13th, 1884, in which grave complaints are made by the Victorian Commissioner of Public Works relative to local bodies employing unqualified men to the position of the foregoing, and thereby infringing the Local Government Act, which provides ■that only, certificated persons shall be employed. The people of Victoria recognise what the greater number of the people do here, that is, the necessity of having a qualified man appointed as engineer to the county ; one* that understands his work and can thereforefurther the interests of both the county and its people, numbering of course, among these its small contractors, many l of wHom are too well aware how they are likely to lose on their ventures with an inexperienced man over them, than with a man who is throughly conversant with his business. If the powers that be doubt the truth of this assertion let: them just try a contract under the present regime of the County Council. _ At all events let us hope.that with a conscientious and just chairman, and a few sensible and right-minded councillors, the question will be thoroughly investigated and considered before arash appointment is made, and if they have any doubts as to the qualifications of any of the present applicants, let them re-advertise the appointment in the leading journals of the colony, and not only locally as was the case before. I think - —^1 may safely say without fear of contra-diciaeß-fck^fcii" any part of the world has suffered nKffe than another from selfconstituted engineers, that part is the West Coast, aard -in-the interests of the county generally this 'letter is written. — Yours, Sec., ■...-.' Common Sense.
