Auckland, June 1. At a meeting of the Auckland Presbytery, the Rev. Mr Runciman carried a motion that the Presbytery instruct the Ministers in bounds to make arrangements for religious instruction on week days of Presbyterian children. This has reference to the public schools. Another victory for Musket's progeny took place at the Great Metropolitan Handicap, of which intelligence was received by mail. It was won by Brown Bess, by Musket out of Cerine. The house of 3. li. Smith, Winton, has been burnt down. He was only married the Bame morning. M'Millan was elected president, and L. D. Nathan vice-pre-sident. June 3. Edward M'Garry, a stall holder in the market, has mysteriously disappeared. P. B. Smith's house burned down at Waitoa was insured for LSOO in the New Zealand ; Bindon's stock and fixtures were insured in the South British for L4OO. C. Greenway, committed for contempt of Court, was subsequently released by Baratow, the Magistrate on apologising. William M'Elroy, road contractor, was killed by the fall of a tree on the road to Warkworth. John Davis, cook, Waikato Hotel, was arrested for having criminal connection with Alice Messenger under 12 yearsi Several Tauranga settlers in Auckland aro getting fresh supplies of timber for re-building ; and the manager of the Bay of Plenty Times has procured a fresh plant.
