THE GREYMOUTH RACES.
Second Day. The second day's races was as great a success as the first. The weather was splendid, the company numerous, and all the events well contested. About one o'clock the bell rang out for the first event, the Goldfields Handic *y, of 70 sovs— lf miles; second horse to receive 10 soys from tLe stakes. Mr Stevenson's gr g Satellite, aged, Oat 1 Mr Brimble's b g Robin J Hood, aged, 7st 81b ... 2 Mr Jones' br g Warrigal, 5 yrs Q%t Bbs 3 V.r Clarke's b g Elfin King, aged, 9st 0 Mr Cameron's b g Native, aged, ... 0
Satellite had the call in the betting. After a false start, Mr Soaton got the horses well &way together, and Robin Flood followed by Warrigal, Native and Satellite, with the King as whipper up. In this order they passed the poat the first time round. When half way round the second time, Satellite challenged Native, and overhauled Mr Jonea's favorite. The outlaw still leading till coming up the straight, when Satellite was let out, and an exciting race ensued between Stevenson's swrprise and the outlaw. Loud cries arose of "Robin Hood wins," and "it's Satellite's race," was heard all over the course, and the excitement was intense, but the grey had more in him, and passed the outlaw about 50 yards from the winning post, both horses being hard whipped. The race was done in very quick time. Hack Rack Handicap, of 15 sovs— l4 miles; entrance, 1 soy ; post entries ; for all horses that have not won public money, hack races accepted, Rata9atslb 1 Rertan, Bat 2 Eddy 7st 21b 3 Royalty, Queen Bee, and Beautiful Star also started. Redan led for some distance, when Raffa and Queen Bee collared him, but it Boon became evident that Rata was too .nuch for his companions, as he won as he liked in a canter. Grey Valley Stakes Handicap, of 30 sovs— l^ miles. Mr Nottle's b g Blazing Star, aged 6st lllbs 1 Mr Brimble's b g Whalebone, 5 yrs 7st 41bs 2 Mr Stevenson's b m Rore, 3 yr?, 7st lOlbs 3 Mr Uameron's Native, aged, 6sb lOlbs ... 0 Mr Jones's br g Warrigal, 5 yrs, 6st 4!b 0 Mr Olaike's bg Elfia Kiag, aged, Bst 31b 0 Satsllite and Falcon were scratched. Both Rore and Blazing Star were made hot favoritiea. The race may b 8 shortly described. Mr Nottle's game and honest little horse, following his usual tactics, forced the racing from the start, and was never headed ; the only horse that had any show with him was Whalebone, who, at one time, pressed him rather hard, but the race was never in doubt, and the Star won by several lengths. The game little horse, " the pet of the Valley," was loudly cheered on weighing in. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 25 soys— 2 miles. Mr Brimble's b g Robin Hood, aged, 93t lib 1 Mr Brimble's b g \7 halebone, 5 yrs, 95t... 2 Mr btevenson's gr g Satellite, aged, lOst 71b 0 Robin Hood was made the favorite. This race was a most hollow affair. The outlaw is a splendid mover over sticks, and nothing else had a ghost of a show. Satellite baulked and bolted, and the outlaw won easily, half the . course separating the first and second horses. Forced Handicap, of 20 soys ; 1| miles ; fo>* all winning horses, except hack races ; nominations, 2 soys ; post entries Mr Nottle's Blazing Star ... 1 Mr Brimble's Robin Hood 2 Mr Stevenson's Satellite 0 Mr Stevenson's Rore ... ... ... 0 The Star won a good race easily. Consolation Stakes Handicap, of 15 soys — 1 mile ; entrance, 1 soy ; post entries. Mr Tarry's Falcon .. 1 Mr Brimb c's Whalebone] 1 Elfin King, Banker, and Warrigal also started. This was a pretty race, and Falcon won by half a neck. This concluded one of the most successful and pleasantest meetings ever run on the Greymouth course.
