WELLINGTON NEWS.
Wellington, March 16. John Knowlea, Unper Secretary of Publsc Works, and J. Blackett Engineer-in-Charge, were examined to-day by the Civil Service Commissioners. It is understood that the Commissioners after completing enquiries, will proceed to lnvercargill. The Local Industries Commissioner has adjourned for a month, to allow certain information to be received from varion3 Chambers of Commerce throughout the Australian Colonies. The repairs to the steamer Waitaki will not be completed in time to allow of her leaving for south to-night. Telegrams have been received, that Mr Stevens, chief officer of the steamer Watatipu, who recently received serious injury while while that vessel was discharging in Sydney, is much improved, and the paralysis is gradually leaving. A deputation waited on the Railway Commissioner for the purpose of giving evidence, as to the benefit which would be derived from the constructions of the Wellington- Foxton Railway. It was stated that if the railway was carried through the district upwards of 300,000 acres of land would be opened up, which would sell at from L 8 to LlO per acre.
