Mr Duncan Corbett" occupied the chair, the guest. of' the evening, Mr M'Beath,' being on his right, Mr John Livingstone acting a' croupier. The Chairman, in proposing the toast of the evening, eulogised, their guest as having been a firm and true friend to the mining population — such a friend as many would feel the loss of , and begged his acceptance of a friendly address as coming from those with whom he had been so long a3sociated :— •■'■..* " From the Miners of the No Town District to Mr Geo. M'Beath, storekeeper, of No Town. ; "On the occasion of your giving qp business, and shortly leaving the No Town district, in which you have been so long, and so favorably known, it is only just that you should be presented with an address, and, theiefore, as .Chairman of the Banquet Committee, I have been deputed to present you -with the same. . j "I am, sir, but the mouth-piece ..of each and every goldsceker, past and precent, in this wide field, when I tell you, without any flattery, that but for your open-handed and generous help, and, in manifold instances, sound advice, a great deal of the precious metal which has been brought to light in this (No Town) district, and I speak advisedly when I add the Nelson Creek district, would have remained undiscovered. - " We are all of us, also, -fully aware of the warm and, indeed,! leading interest which you at all time. 1 ? manifested in the geueral welfare of the district, and which may be seen embodied in the National School and Church, both of which are great boons to any locality, and we bej to add that your name will long be r> uierabered in connection with the No Town Friendly Society, and for your invariable kindness to : married and 'sick miners on their way to the Qreymouth Hospital. ' ■'-■*■ "It is impossible to say more, 'fo
more of any man cannot be said, and ia wishing you God speed wherever you go, the miners of this place are heartUy joined by all the business people, who are unanimously of opinion that you do not leave one single enemy behind you. "I have only to add, sir, that personally it is a pleasure to me, as one of I the oldest resident miners in this district, to have been deputed by. a committee of the entire community to present you with this address. > " Signed by order of the Committee. It is in contemplation before Mr M'Beath's final departure to present -Mm with a substantial token of ; the esteem ia which he is held in the district.
